SAD Lights: Light Boxes vs. SAD Lamps

Apollo has manufactured the largest line of sad lights, lamps and light boxes over the last 20 years. The variety of light boxes and sad lights we offer is due to the number of research studies we’ve participated in as well as the tens of thousands of customers we serve every year. Most of the proprietary technology and effectiveness is the result of these research studies, while many of the innovative features are from direct consumer input.

Do I need a light box or a sad lamp? Which is more effective?

When deciding between a desk lamp, light box or SAD lamp, answering a few questions will help you quickly know which will work best for you.

  • Take the Circadian Rhythm Assessment test. This test will let you know how bad your condition is and creates a personalized schedule that will help you recover as quickly as possible. If your test score is mild to moderate, you’ll do very well with a SAD lamp GoLite or smaller portable light box like the SunTouch Plus. If your condition is severe, we recommend using the physician’s light box line, called the Brite Lite III, IV or IV.
  • How are you going to use the light box or SAD light every day? Will you need to use it first thing in the morning or late in the evening? (The best way to know is by taking the Circadian Rhythm Assessment test. The test will tell you which disorder you’re suffering from, and it will create the best, personalized treatment schedule for you.) Where will you be? If you’re in a rush and can’t spend much time, you’re best off with a more portable unit. Also, since specialized light therapy can help boost energizing hormones at any time of the day (especially during those afternoon slumps), you may want a travel type of light such as the GoLite.
  • Do I need one SAD light box, or more? You will probably find over time that you need more than one light box or SAD Lamp. Seasonal Affective Disorder is a long-term condition that will afflict you most of your life. It just makes sense to protect against it as much as you can. Also, different SAD lights, light boxes, dawn simulators and desk lamps perform different needed functions. For example, dawn simulators are best for restoring the sleep cycle and helping you awaken refreshed. Light boxes are best for resetting and entraining your circadian rhythm—the main problem with Seasonal Affective Disorder. Full spectrum, desk-style SAD lamps help a great deal during the day to increase the amplitude of your circadian rhythm, boosting active hormones and improving alertness.

Which ever product you choose, rest assured that all light boxes or SAD lights manufactured by Apollo have been shown to be effective. But remember, the most important factor in choosing a SAD light is whether it’s convenient enough to keep using.
