In our church parking lot we have exclusively low pressure sodium lighting for low cost of operation, high light output, and to be friendly with the local astronomy nieghbors. We have about thirty LPS fixtures which include mostly 135 watt and 180 watt with a number of wall units of 35 watt. We have about six 180 watt units that are in key areas for walking, so they are always of a higher concern to keep working. The biggest problem with the lighting is the maintenance required to replace bad lamps which sometimes last years, and somethimes only months. All our ballasts are fused at twice normal amperage to handle the start surge and the overload that happens when a lamp burns out. "Note" When a lamp burns out the ballast draws almost twice normal amperage, so you are using more power while not getting "any light!"
My cost for lamps were about 40% less than what I pay locally, and with multiple bulb purchase shipping was low enough to still make this purchase cost effective. I was concerned about shipping with the lamp construction of glass tubing inside of a glass tube, and the almost four foot tube length. I had no breakage, and can say all the ordered lamps are currently operating!
