by cmlatlanta Highly recommended for Halogen Replacement LED Downlights
Like many people, I've been looking for ways to save on energy consumption. I've replaced many bulbs with CFL bulbs where practical. My family rejected the CFL bulbs in the recessed "cans" for various reasons and I've been testing different LED replacements for several years. This review is not about the replacement inserts, but I'll give them a plug anyway. The Cree CR6 is simply fantastic. I am extremely picky and I've tested no less than 10 other LED replacement solutions and extremely happy with the Cree CR6 2700K recessed downlight replacement. It has perhaps better color rendering and is brighter than the 75w PAR30L halogen flood that was previously installed in the cans. The measured power of the replacement is 9.5w. The only problem was that the replacement solution had a wider spread and was perhaps a bit too bright for our light layout where we had a 6 inch recessed cans with black trim rings. Now for details: I purchased the CT6AB - 6 in. Trim Rings for the Cree CR6 to try to eliminate the "spread" of light from the fixtures. By itself the CR6 has a pretty wide footprint. Definitely wider than the PAR30L Flood light that we replaced. The old flood is the one that has little microlenses in the surface of the lamp face. Although it is a "flood", it still provides a narrow beam of light compared to the CR6. The stock CR6 provides a wider flood of light with the white stock trim. It covers a wider area because the light reflects off the white trim. My house was designed by a lighting designer for the specific bulb and black Juno trim rings. We have more lights providing a very appealing focus. Adding the CT6AB replicated the focus and appeal that original lighting designer intended. The CT6AB is a highly recommended accessory for the CR6. Over the next few months I'll be installing over a hundred downlight replacements, all with the CT6AB.
