T5 Bulbs - Fluorescent HE and HO Programmed Start

Operated with programmed start ballasts, these lamps are preheated before the starting voltage is applied to help extend the life of the lamp. These T5 bulbs are ideal for areas where lights are turned on and off frequently. To further increase the lamp life, pair these T5 bulbs with occupancy sensors. T5 light bulbs are available in high efficiency and high output options. High efficiency lamps operate at lower wattages and produce a standard light output. High output lamps deliver more light than high efficiency versions and use a higher wattage. Please note that T5 bulbs cannot be used to replace T8 bulbs and vice versa. T5s are shorter and have different pin spacing that requires lampholders designed specifically for T5 light bulbs.

To identify which T5 bulbs you currently have, look at the order code printed on the lamp. This code begins with the letter "F" for fluorescent and a number that indicated the wattage. This is followed by the letter "T" for tube and the number 5, which represents the diameter of 0.65 inches. This is followed sometimes by "HO" to indicate that the lamp is high output. For example, a F54T5HO lamp uses 54 Watts and delivers a high light output.

Where to Use T5 Bulbs

T5 bulbs are commonly used in high bays, under cabinet lights, display cases, and other similar applications. To ensure you choose the right bulb for your area, make sure to consider the color temperature (Kelvin) of the light. Lamps in the 3000 Kelvin to 3500 Kelvin range produce a warmer light that is similar to halogen bulbs. The 4000 Kelvin to 5000 Kelvin range produces a cooler light that has been shown to help improve visibility. To reduce eye strain in classroom and offices, choose a 4000 Kelvin light. To increase overall concentration in warehouses, look for a 5000 Kelvin light. T5 light bulbs in the 6500 Kelvin range produce a full spectrum light. These lamps are good for areas that do not receive a lot of natural light.
