Multiple Load Multi-Location Dimmer Switches
Multi-Load Dimmer Switches for Multi-Location Installations
Multi-load dimmers can support more than one technology. For example, a multi-load dimmer may be compatible with CFL, LED, incandescent, and halogen, or a combination of those. One of the benefits of this type of dimmer switch is that when switching from incandescent to CFL or LED, you may not need to also change out the dimmer switch. Each of our dimmable LED light bulbs has a spec sheet or dimmer compatibility PDF hyperlinked from the product page. Checking the list of compatible dimmers will help you avoid any performance issues. Using dimmable LED bulbs with a dimmer switch not designed for an LED load can result in humming, buzzing, flickering, reduced dimming range, or lights that won't dim at all.
Multi-location dimmers allow you to not only turn the lights on or off from multiple locations, but also control the light levels. While 3-way switches only allow you to control dimming from one switch, multi-location dimmers allow dimming from the multi-location switch and the accessory dimmers also used on the circuit. They may also support remote dimming from a wireless remote or your smart phone. Only one multi-location dimmer switch is needed; the rest of the switches on the circuit should be accessory dimmers.
Some of these dimmers may incorporate additional features including wireless control, occupancy/vacancy sensors, daylight harvesting, and fade-on or fade-off control.
