Using less energy and lasting far longer than similar incandescent or halogen bulbs, LED PAR lamps reduce maintenance and replacement costs. Commonly used in track, recessed, and flood lighting, these bulbs are available in a variety of sizes ranging from PAR16s to PAR38s. Some bulbs can be dimmed when paired with compatible dimmers. For additional savings in the form of state or local rebates, look for bulbs with additional certifications such as Energy Star or JA8.
Beam Angles and Color Temperature
Unlike LED BR lamps which only produce a wide flood light, LED PAR bulbs can produce a variety of beam angles:
- Narrow Spot - beam angle of less than 10 degrees
- Spot - 15 degree beam angle
- Narrow Flood - 25 degree beam angle
- Flood - 36 to 45 degree beam angle
- Wide flood - beam angle greater than 50 degrees
Color temperature (measured in Kelvin) represents the color of the light produced and can affect the look and feel of a room. Producing a yellowish light that closely matches the light from incandescents, 2700 Kelvin bulbs create a warm and cozy atmosphere. 3000 to 3500 Kelvin bulbs produce a whiter light similar to halogens that helps create a welcoming feel. Bulbs in the 4000 Kelvin range produce a cooler, more blue light that helps reduce eye strain. Similar to daylight, 5000 Kelvin bulbs are best suited for display or task lighting. Bulbs with warm dimming offer a unique twist on traditional dimming. Instead of decreasing the brightness, the color temperature gradually lowers into a warmer temperature. For example, a bulb will start at a halogen 3000 Kelvin and decrease into a very warm 2400 Kelvin. This produces a relaxing and comforting feel similar to sunrise and sunset.
High CRI Bulbs
Many LED PAR bubs have a high color rendering index (CRI), which is the measurements of how accurately a bulb renders color as compared to the midday sun. In order to be considered a high CRI bulb, the color rendering index must be 90 or higher. High CRI bulbs make colors appear brighter and more accurate, while lower CRI can make look inaccurate or washed out.
Where to Use LED PAR Bulbs
LED PAR bulbs can be used in a wide range of applications, making them extremely versatile. Common applications include accent lighting in homes, office lobbies, hallways, and retail stores. These bulbs can also be used with landscape lighting to accentuate stonework, statues, and other features. High CRI LED PAR bulbs are commonly used in museums and art galleries to highlight paintings and sculptures. Retail stores also use these bulbs to showcase high-end merchandise. Colored LED PAR bulbs can be used to make decor and landscaping features stand out.
Be sure to check the enclosure and location ratings before selecting your LED PAR bulb. Damp location rated bulbs can be used in humid areas such as bathrooms but cannot come into direct contact with water. If used outdoors, it must be used in a location where the bulb will be protected. For LED PAR lamps that can come into direct contact, look for bulbs that are wet location rated. For fixtures that are enclosed, you will need to use enclosed rated bulbs. Using a non-enclosed rated bulb in an enclosed fixture can shorten the life of the bulb and potentially damage the fixture.
