T5 sockets can be used with both fluorescent and LED tubes, and are available as non-shunted, shunted, or conversion sockets. Receiving power though a single path, non-shunted sockets are used with direct wire LED T5 tubes and fluorescent fixtures with programmed start ballasts. Shunted sockets receive power though multiple paths and are required for fixtures with instant start ballasts.

T8 to T5 conversion sockets allow the use of T5 tubes in T8 fixtures to help reduce energy costs. Replacing the existing lampholder, these non-shunted sockets provide an extended depth to ensure that the T5 tube fits. These sockets should only be used in fixtures with programmed start ballasts.
