These ballasts operate lamps in two stages. The cathodes are fully pre-heated first, and then the starting voltage is applied. This starting method helps prolong the life of the lamps, making programed start ballasts ideal for areas where lights are turned on an off frequently. Pair these ballasts with occupancy sensors to further increase lamp life. Programmed start ballasts rated for indoor locations should only be used in applications where the fixture will not come into contact with any moisture or water. Outdoor rated ballasts can be used for outdoor applications, but should still be protected from the elements.
What is Ballast Factor?
Ballast factor is the measure of how much light a ballast can produce from the lamp. A low ballast factor (below 0.77) saves energy by operating lamps at a lower light output that what the lamps are rated for. These ballasts are best for hallways and stairwells. Ballasts with a normal ballast factor (0.77 to 0.98) operate lamps at or near their rated output and are ideal for general applications such as offices and schools. For locations where you need additional light, such as areas with high ceilings, choose high ballast factor (above 1.0) programmed start ballasts. You can choose to operate your T8 lamps at a higher wattage to increase the light output by up to 10%.
