Oil filled capacitors derive their name from the oil that is used to fill in around the plates. This oil cools the capacitor windings, fills in any pockets of air, and helps reduce arcing. These capacitors are designed for used in high voltage and power applications, including industrial, stadium, and horticulture lighting. Wires from the HID lighting ballast connect to terminals at the top of oil capacitors.
When to Replace Light Capacitors
Capacitors should always be visually inspected and tested for capacitance levels during routine fixture maintenance. If the light output of your fixture is dimmer than normal, use a digital multimeter with a capacitance function to test the output of your light capacitor. If the capacitance is drastically lower than the rated level, the capacitor needs to be replaced. Oil filled capacitors with noticeable bulges or leaks need to be replaced immediately. Avoid shorts by making sure the wiring connections to the oil capacitor and HID ballast are secure. These capacitors should not be used where temperatures exceeded 194 degrees Fahrenheit or in areas where there are strong vibrations.
