The Intermatic EJ351 in-wall mechanical timer is easy to program with up to 24 on/off settings per day as well as a random setting that varies programmed daily on/off cycles to deter thieves. The timer also features self-learning, so that if it is not manually programmed, it will repeat the first 24 hour on/off pattern. A 15 minute memory guards against power failure. The EJ351 is for single pole applications and can be used with existing standard wall plates. Please note that when two or more timers are installed in the same wall box, the maximum wattage for this timer is 400 watts. It is intended for incandescent lighting only.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Already own one and wanted another since I like the first so well! Easy to install and very user friendly instructions for setting appropriate on/off timing. I like the fact that it has 2 separate ways to program the timer - just in case one has trouble with dial setting, they can manually push a button to turn light on and then off again. Super idea! Rated 5 out of 5 by Efficient electronic timer 1KB's description says "mechanical", but that's wrong -- this is electronic. There's no motor in it, no time readout. It counts power-line frequency to determine on-off times. Since it's electronic, it doesn't waste as much energy as timers run by inefficient single-phase synchronous clock motors, which can easily draw from 5 to 10 watts just to operate the mechanism. Certainly this has to have some standby/operating power and on-state conduction loss, but judging by the dissipated heat, the losses are very small. I've had the previous incarnation of these running for well over 20 years. In that time, there's been one failure out of three operational, which is a pretty good record, especially considering that they operate through the nastiest transients that the raw power line has to offer. The one under the most stress controls some exterior lighting that includes 5x 10W CFs, 5x 25W "exit" style incandescent lamps, and 1x 18W CF. The timer runs an autotransformer to drop the line voltage 15% on this circuit to extend the life of the (expensive and difficult to replace) incandescent lamps. That may allow the CF get along better with this particular timer. I can't make any statement concerning its ability to operate a circuit consisting of only CFs. They say "don't do it", so I'll take them at their word. Too bad though since that more or less forces you to use a noisy, wear-prone, and inefficient mechanical timer if you want the efficiency of CFs. If Intermatic is smart, they'll upgrade the circuity in this timer to play nice with CFs. Anyway, as long as you have a suitable load, I recommend these highly. I wish they made a SPDT version. Rated 5 out of 5 by great features; easy install Just installed one on some upper cabinet accent lighting (with timer set to serve as "night light" in our kitchen). Have previously used this item for security purposes--multiple on/off cycles to give property "occupied" appearance when not at home. Can use switch for day-to-day function with no impact to timer settings. Programming is easy. October 28, 2011
