    Description

This Ushio 3000528 energy-saving a-shape cold cathode lamp is ideal for special applications, such as signage, where reduced maintenance and energy costs are desired. With a long-life of 25,000 hours, the 8-watt clear CCFL has specially designed cathodes allowing the lamp to cycle, flash, and dim with no impact on life. The Ushio 3000528 is dimmable when used with analog dimmers only. For proper operation, the CCFL should be allowed to come to full brightness before dimming. No dimmable CCFL on the market today will dim lower than 10 percent of its full brightness.

Mercury containing products sold into the state of WA include an environmental handling charge of .25/each

    Important Note

BEFORE you turn on a dimmable CCFL light bulb...

Please understand that dimmable cold cathode fluorescent (CCFL) light bulbs will not work properly at the same voltage settings used for incandescent light bulbs. If you simply replace your incandescent light bulbs without adjusting your dimmer, your new dimmable CCFL light bulbs will flicker and extinguish at the low voltage setting. Therefore, we recommend the following procedure when installing dimmable CCFL light bulbs:

    1. Turn off the power to your current incandescent light bulbs.
    2. Replace the incandescents with your new dimmable CCFL light bulbs.
    3. Re-energize the lighting circuit with your dimmer in the "full light" setting.
    4. Slowly dim your new CCFL light bulbs until they just begin to flicker.
    5. From that point, raise the light level slightly until all CCFL light bulbs are operating without flicker at a dimmed level. Set this level as your new "low setting."

This procedure should prevent flickering, extinguishing at low levels, and early failure of CCFL light bulbs. If, however, these difficulties occur, replace any CCFL light bulb with an incandescent light bulb. The addition of an incandescent or inductive load will stop the flicker, allow a lower light level setting, and should prolong the life of your CCFL light bulbs. Please let us know if we can help in any other way. (3/7/10)

Rated 2 out of 5 by Cold Cathode CFL bulbs still imperfect I put a new chandelier in my dining room in March of 2010. I purchased 10 of these 8W cold cathode Ushio bulbs (9 for the fixture, 1 as a spare). The features I liked were energy efficiency (replacing an 8 bulb x 40W fixture with 9 bulbs x 8W) and the dimming ability. The results after 1 year - Good: The bulbs dim smoothly and to a very low percentage of total light - excellent. The color index is also excellent. Not so good: They are not 40 W equivalent and they take a long time to warm up. Maybe 30W-32W equivalent is more realistic. Also, while rated for 25,000 hours, I have lost two of these bulbs in the last few months (about a year old...maybe 500 hours on them). So I used my spare bulb...and I still have 1 light out. This was not a cheap investment. I am considering putting 40W incandescent bulbs into the fixture - at this rate, the energy savings will never cover the cost of the replacements. I'm not sure dimmable fluorescents are ready for prime time yet. If you buy the cold cathode bulbs for the efficiency, great dimming and color index...buy a larger size than indicated and get some spares. February 7, 2012
