I bought a couple of these (one spare) to replace a string of burnt-out low voltage mini incandescent lights which were being used to decorate an outdoor Christmas wreath. I was quite impressed by the apparent quality of the product: solid, neat, and well put together.
Having had disappointing battery life results from earlier products I decided to run a test before adding the lights to the wreath. For the test I used a fresh set of alkaline batteries with an expiry date many years into the future. The switch on the unit was set to the "steady on" position. The first four days were run outdoors in a temperature range of approximately 23°F to 40°F (+/- 5°C) and the rest of the test run indoors at around 70°F / 21°C.
After the first four days the blue and green lights were still bright, but the yellow and red had dimmed noticeably. The unit was then brought inside and the batteries warmed up, and the yellow and red lights recovered somewhat. Over a further four days they continued to dim, followed by the blue, until at the end of an eight day run only the green lights were really bright. At this point, however, I checked the output voltages of the individual cells, and found that although two had an acceptable value (1.27 V) the other was well below par (0.47V). When I replaced this cell, all the colors returned to an acceptable level of brightness.
From the very cursory test described above, I find that battery life doesn't seem to be of major concern. With a just a little luck with individual battery cell variations I feel I could count on at least a week's output from a set of batteries in an indoor setting, and much more if the "6 hour on / 18 hour off" timer setting was used.
Although I am happy on the whole with battery life, I still prefer to rely on an AC / DC converter to power outdoor applications during a northern winter. Luckily it proved quite easy to solder a couple of 22-24 gauge wires to the battery terminal plates and lead them out though a tiny hole drilled in the box, and thence to a DC connector. It would be a nice additional feature for the unit to have an integral DC jack with battery cut-out.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Freeman Solved my problem
Looking for party lights that are not 110 volt are hard to find that look good and don't have to be plugged in. Wanted to use candles at the hotel reception but they wouldn' allow candles or plug in lights. These solved my problem and look really cool too! And thinking we can use these again at Christmas for putting in table decorations.
